Poplar board
Poplar wood boards(planks). The boards were prepared at the sawmill of the organization Stadhout in Oudekerk aan de Amstel. The board was cut to its final dimensions from an unprocessed lumber trunk belonging to a poplar tree formerly felled, in the summer of 2025, on the plot next to Gerrit Rietveld Academie under the address of Fred. Roeskestraat 94.
The tree was cut into boards and other useful pieces then put on the terrain to dry. Sticks were placed between all the boards in the stack to allow airflow. The stacks are put under weight to prevent the wood from warping as the moisture leaves.
It is claimed that the boards will need one year of drying per 2 centimeters of thickness. The planks are left outside for half a year to let the wind blow through so the wood can die, which is the term used for the wood losing its initial moisture. For the final part, the boards are moved inside. It’s a long term investment. In one year the first students will be able to use the planks for their projects.
Very thick pieces of wood are really difficult to dry. Wet wood is much softer and easier to work with than dry wood.
